Interests/Involvement
The Organic Growers of Ithaca College is a student run organization interested in growing organic produce in order to educate peers about food production and encourage them to take part in the local food movement . I worked at the garden for 3 years as the marketing manager, promoting the garden and recruiting members.
The Resource Environmental Management Program (REMP) aims to promote sustainability on campus through implementing reuse programs and educating the college community about preserving the environment. During my time at Ithaca College I worked for REMP for three years. On campus and at special events I worked with a team to educate my peers about the campuses composting program and resource use reduction.
At Sustainable South Bronx my work primarily dealt with the South Bronx Green way project, which aimed to restore the water front, parks, build bike lanes and make the area more walkable. Part of the Greenway was planting more trees in the area to improve air quality and for beautification. I created a management plan for newly planted trees and organized volunteer groups. I was also out in the field doing clean up with some volunteer groups and building tree guards.
At the SPCA was a Dog walker and Dog companion. I went on a weekly basis to spend time with the dogs. The campus is conveniently located across and open field and I got to take the dogs on good long walks.
During my internship with Gardens for Humanity in I wrote the curriculum for a gardening course at a community center and taught the course. I also helped out with events such as the Iron Chef Junior competition, which aimed to get children to learn about local food and enjoy cooking. For that event I was in charge of contacting the participants and helped out with the training sessions. It was a great experience and assured me that I would enjoy work with non-profits in the future.
As a student I was apart of several student organizations and programs such as the Organic Growers of IC, The Ithaca College Natural Lands Stewardship Program and the Resource Environmental Management Program (REMP). In order to further peruse my interests I also did internships at home in the Bronx and within the Ithaca community.
